Welcome to the construction zone

The Nature Conservancy Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve, Muscongus Bay, Maine

We are currently designing this blogsite and a new web page for NEW-CUE and the Women's Work conferences and writing workshops. What you see here for the present is a working template for a blog that is still under construction. Some of the links and badges may not work. Others will send you to pages that may or may not be related to the tab you clicked, since they are there simply for the purpose of "place-holding" in cyberspace.

Your patience while we build this site is appreciated. We anticipate that it will be fully up and running in the near future.

Setting out

A small band of us are meeting at Sydney Plum's cottage in Maine this week to plan the future of "The Environmental Writers’ Conference in honor of Rachel Carson," an event that has been held biennially along the mid-coast of Maine. The Conference, sponsored by the non-profit organization, NEW-CUE, has been a blend of scholarly and creative presentations, readings, informal discussions, and workshops. New and experienced writers, educators and artists formed a special community, participating in an event honoring Rachel Carson. Five conferences have been held thus far — in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008 — at the Spruce Point Inn Resort in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

Times are tough in the conference world, however--here, there, and everywhere. As such, we're here brainstorming and talking about the sacred and mundane--things like direction, and purpose, and maximizing community, and how the heck we can pay for the buffet. Changes are coming, and we think they'll be good ones. One of the first you may notice, for example, is a change in the title: "Women's Work Writing, in the Spirit of Rachel Carson." It should clue you in a little about the direction we're heading for our mission.

Another change is this blog itself. Look here for updates on where we're going.
